Beverly’s Story

Here at the Y, we like to, say that we strengthen the community through programs and relationships that build a healthy spirit, body and mind. However, this is not just something we just say - our staff and members are doing it!

Bev Wagner, one of our most popular trainers and instructors, and a group of Y members recently competed at the Dave Parcells Madison Triathlon in Madison, CT on Sunday, September 11. This was the first tri that the group had competed in since the pandemic began. They’d been training together throughout the pandemic, swimming in the Y pool (and in open water), spinning and cycling, and running (all while following COVID protocols). They all supported each other and were inclusive throughout training (all ages and ability levels). A few group members even formed a relay team, so that they could all participate.

The following members competed: Mike Keady and his daughter Caitlin, Todd Armstrong, Geoff Beringer, Mike Case, Katie Friend, Annette Madden-Kline, Art Morris, Melissa O’Brien (Y CFO), and Joy Sy (former Y member). Monica Keady, a Y yoga/meditation teacher, was the unofficial Darien Y photographer. The group had amazing results! Bev, Annette, Mike K. and Caitlin all placed in their age group!

Melissa O’Brien and Todd Armstrong participated in the event 11 years ago. Back in June, they decided to train once again here at the Y. A picture of them at the finish line in 2010 and 2021 is below. Hard to tell which is which year! Come join the Y and find your fountain of youth, too!  Contact our new Fitness Director, Nick Koproski, for information about the programs we offer. nkoproski@darien-ymca.org
