Valentina Kovalenko
Valentina’s experience as a competitive gymnast and coach has been instrumental in elevating the Darien YMCA gymnastics program to new heights. With her vast background, she has shared her extensive competitive experience with her gymnasts, resulting in numerous successes, including multiple State and Regional Championships, a YMCA National Championship, and the crowning of an individual All-Around Champion, Jessica Bolduc.
Before moving to the United States in 1995, Valentina coached at the Mariupol Sports School of Olympic Reserve for Juniors and Children. In the U.S., she began her coaching career at the Academy of Elite Gymnastics in Orlando, Florida, where she coached Shayla Worley, who later became a World Champion and a member of the U.S. National Team. Following her time in Orlando, she continued her coaching career with her husband Vladimir at Gym Carolina in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Valentina’s own competitive career is equally impressive. She was a member of the Ukrainian National Gymnastics Team from 1972 to 1977, competing for the prestigious Spartak Gymnastics Team. In 1976, her team placed 3rd at the 42nd U.S.S.R. Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. Notably, she competed alongside gymnastics legends like Nelli Kim, the 1976 Olympic Floor and Vault Champion, and Yelena Davydova, the 1980 Olympic Champion.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Valentina holds a Master of Sport title and is a graduate of both the Kiev State Institute and the Dnipropetrovsk State Institute of Physical Education, where she earned her degree in Physical Culture and Sports. She was also awarded the highest coaching qualification in Ukraine.
Her early years as a gymnast were equally formative. Valentina began gymnastics in second grade and quickly rose through the ranks. She represented Ukraine in numerous national and international tournaments, including the 1975 Spartakiad, and earned a bronze medal in the 42nd USSR Championships. She was awarded the esteemed USSR Master of Sport classification for her contributions to the sport.
After graduating from university in 1981 with a degree in physical therapy and gymnastics coaching, she embarked on a successful coaching career. Valentina worked as Head Coach at the Specialized Sports School of Olympic Reserve in her hometown of Poltava and later transferred to the No. 2 School in Mariupol, where she coached elite gymnasts such as National Team member Luba Volodina and Junior European Champion Olga Kozlova.
In 1995, Valentina was invited to coach in the United States. At the Academy of Elite Gymnastics in Orlando, she and Vladimir coached future World Champion Shayla Worley from Level 3 to Level 7. In 1999, they moved to Gym Carolina in Raleigh, where Valentina trained numerous Level 10 and Level 9 Junior Olympic National qualifiers and State Champions.
Since 2001, Valentina has been a key figure at the Darien YMCA, where her contributions have been vital to the team’s success. She has coached standout gymnasts like Jessica Bolduc, the 2007 YMCA Nationals All-Around Champion, and Adnerys DeJesus, a two-time All-American and Division 1 gymnast for Nebraska and Iowa State. Under her leadership, the Darien YMCA team has become a three-time YMCA National Championship Division winner, producing numerous USAG Junior Olympic National qualifiers, State and Regional champions, and medalists.
Valentina’s legacy in the world of gymnastics, both as an athlete and a coach, continues to inspire the next generation of gymnasts. Her passion, dedication, and expertise have left an indelible mark on the sport and on the gymnasts, she has coached throughout her career.
