OUR COMMITMENT OF PREVENTATIVE MEASURES

The Darien YMCA is committed to implementing prevention efforts to ensure that those who swim in our pools are safe. ALL swim participants will be tested to evaluate competency. All children aged 5 – 12 must complete the aquatics skills assessment and be assigned a red, orange or green wristband prior to swimming in the pool. Swim assessments will be conducted by a Lifeguard or Aquatics Supervisor and can be reassessed as needed. As posted on the pool rules, all non-swimmers will remain within arm’s reach of an adult at all times during recreational swim periods. Age restrictions for pool usage are:

  • Children 8 years and under must be always accompanied by an adult 18 or over in the water.
  • Children ages 9-11 years old must have an adult present on the pool deck.
  • Youth ages 12 and over are permitted to swim without an adult in the pool area
  • Non swimmers, regardless of age, must have a guardian *min age 18, in the water within arm’s reach at ali times.

Swim Test Band Colors: Test, Mark, Protect. All children will be tested for ability and marked with a colored wrist band:

RED BAND:

Non swimmer. Must wear floatation device and remain in shallow water within arm’s length of an adult.

YELLOW BAND:

Beginner swimmer. Must stay in the shallow water. Can swim 15 feet unassisted, float for 30 seconds. Able to return to vertical from floating position.

GREEN BAND:

Begin in shallow water to ensure they can swim to the mid-line of the pool. Then move to deep water- swimmer can jump into deep water, swim 25 yards proficiently, tread water 1 min and float. Allowed to swim in all areas of the pool. 

Swim band assignments will be kept on file on the pool deck and bands will be issued to swimmers as they
enter for family swim or the respective program.

Special events/Birthday parties/Outside groups:

  • Birthday parties and/or special event swimmers will be swim tested to determine ability prior to
    the start of the event. Non swimmers will be provided with a life jacket and an adult will be
    required to be in the water. Ratio of 1:5 will be maintained for all non-swimmers during birthday
    parties or special events.
